What is the F-1/OPT 17 month extension?

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a one-year work visa intended for recent graduates of approved academic programs in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) areas. OPT holders may be eligible for an additional 17-month OPT extension after the initial one year if their employers are enrolled in the optional E-Verify program, a web-based employment verification system. It is valid for 17 months and the applicant’s work must directly relate to his or her course of study.

What is the H-3 visa?

Created for training in the U.S., sponsorship for the H-3 visa involves generating and detailing a complex training program. Sponsors must assert that the training is useful and unavailable outside the U.S. Employment is allowed only if it is proven to be a necessary part of training. The H-3 visa is valid for up to two years.

What is the J-1 visa?

A J-1 visa trainee is eligible to work for a U.S. employer and be compensated for training purposes. Most J-1 trainee programs can be no more than 18 months and cannot be extended. The trainee must be sponsored by an approved Exchange Visitor Program.
